Roberto at the Gold Glove Bar makes a mean Manhattan!

I spent the past two evenings at Dodger Stadium, with two very different outcomes.

Monday, my hubby’s birthday, we watched the game from a friend’s front-row Loge seats, and the Dodgers didn’t disappoint. But before the game, I persuaded my husband to come to the Gold Glove Bar with me for drinks and a pregame snack. We had Manhattans made by everybody’s favorite bartender, Roberto.

On our way up to our seats, we stood in camera range while Nomar Garciaparra, Jerry Hairston Jr. & John Hartung did the pregame show. We also toured Centerfield Plaza. It was Hawaiian Shirt Night, so there were a lot of people wearing blue-and-white Aloha-style Dodger shirts. (It was a special-ticket package, so we didn’t get one, although some dude offered to sell us his … for $500!)

Then there was the game, which boiled down to just one inning, in the long run.

In the bottom of the 3rd — with the D’Backs ahead, 1-0 — Kiké Hernández led off with a solo home run. Then Miguel Rojas and Mookie Betts each singled and Shohei Ohtani walked to load the bases with nobody out! Up to the plate steps Freddie Freeman. On a 2-1 count, he slams it over the fence just right of centerfield. It was so beautiful! Happy Birthday, Steve!

My view of the moment that won the game.

Will Smith capped the inning off with another solo dinger, and then the Dodgers managed to hold onto the lead through the rest of the game, finished ahead, 6-4.

GAME 50: Dodgers 6-Diamondbacks 4

Side note: Channeling the L.A. Blue Bum, I wrote a haiku to celebrate Steve’s birthday, which they (sort of) put on the left-field board after the 5th inning. It said, “Who woulda thunk it? Seemayer is 70 … Go Dodgers!” The last line was edited from a 5-syllable phrase that I wasn’t sure they’d use in the first place, but I had to try.

Now, last night was a completely different story. Our bats were dead, our pitching was not up to par, and when Joc Pederson put the nail in our coffin with a 3-run homer in the 7th inning, Steve got up and left. I stayed because I was keeping score, and I always hope until the last out that we will pull off a miracle. I’ve seen it happen, so I know it can be done.

GAME 51: Diamondbacks 7-Dodgers 3
MY SCORECARDS

Chris Taylor does the Freddie at 2nd base.

What an August our Boys in Blue have had! 23 wins, just 4 losses! Holy cow!

The thing I love is that they really seem to be having a great time. Their camaraderie is palpable, whether it’s every double being celebrated with hands in the air and shaking those hips (they call it The Freddie), or the choreographed handshake that follows home runs, of which we’ve had a few.

It may be a coincidence, but it seems to have started when we reclaimed Kiké Hernández from the Red Sox at the end of July. He’s always been a firecracker, and his energy has infiltrated every corner of the Dodgers clubhouse. Even Miguel Rojas’ DayGlo green shoes! I always liked Kiké, even though I wouldn’t wear his T-shirt after he was sent to Boston. He wasn’t a Dodger anymore. But now he’s been reinstated and my blue #14 Hernández shirt is back in the lineup.

Anyway, Stephen and I went to the game last night (Aug. 29). The Dodgers creamed the D’backs, 9-1. Clayton Kershaw pitched 5 innings, but he wasn’t looking like himself. He walked 3, and had at least 5 full counts. Strikes only barely outnumbered balls. Still, even in a poor showing, Kersh is Kersh. He only gave up 1 run and 3 hits, and he notched his 12th win of the season and the 209th of his career. (He has tied Don Drysdale’s record, second only to Don Sutton’s 233.)

Tuesday was Chris Taylor Bobblehead Night, and he went 3-for-3 with a walk. It was the best showing by a Dodger on his bobblehead night since Manny Ramirez.

It was also Taco Tuesday and Cal State LA Day (Yay, Golden Eagles!), AND the World Champion El Segundo Little Leaguers were honored before the game. Unfortunately, there weren’t a whole hell of a lot of fans there to cheer any of those things. I don’t get it. Both games since this homestand started have been very sparsely attended. Maybe it’s the heat. It can’t be the Dodgers. They are on fucking fire!

I know I haven’t written in a while, but, let’s be honest, the Dodgers haven’t done much to write about lately. And when they do show promise, it’s almost always squandered by what’s got to be the worst bullpen the Dodgers have EVER had!

I hate being negative. I want to BELIEVE so badly! (Thank you, Ted Lasso!) But it’s getting really hard to do it. I mean, seriously? With the sweep over the weekend, the dreaded Giants overtook us. Not for FIRST PLACE, mind you, but for SECOND! Arizona still has the top spot.

Let’s see how it goes with the smokin’-hot Angels tonight and tomorrow. Because the Cheaters (those a-holes from Houston) are coming to town on Friday.

But, I have to be honest. I’m not at all optimistic at this point.
